Neumann News-Weekly Bulletin

January 15, 2012 --

GRATITUDE

As we continue the New Year, one of the things I've been praying with is this notion of gratitude. I invite everyone to spend some time thinking about what they are grateful for in their life.

I'm grateful for all that Rosemary Santel has done for our parish as secretary and office manager. She has been an employee of St. John Neumann parish for 19 years. She has been the voice, the eyes and the ears of St. John Neumann. She has a way of putting everyone at ease and feeling better when they come to the office. Her smile radiates through this place. She does not want any formal recognition when she retires. I would ask that you please call her, send her an e-mail or a note of appreciation for all that she has done for SJN.

I'm grateful for the parishioners who made a donation that enabled us to purchase our new gold vessels that we use at our Eucharistic celebrations. Along with the words that are changing, we were encouraged to purchase vessels that would add to the dignity and mystery of our celebration. We are still permitted to use glass and we will use both the glass and the gold vessels. The ceramic vessels were given to Lauren Hackman to use at the Christo Rey school in Chicago where she is ministering.

I'm grateful for our staff and parishioners and all that you do for our parish. Thank you for your Christmas gifts, wishes and blessings to me and to the staff. St. John Neumann was known for his charitable acts throughout his ministry. Thank you for all that you do to help those in our area and for all that you do to assist me in my ministry.

May God shower you with blessings and peace in the New Year!
Peace,
Fr. Steve

Tender Mercies needs your help
Tender Mercies is a program through which St. John Neumann parishioners prepare and serve a meal on the last Tuesday of each month for approximately 30 residents of a group home in Over-the-Rhine.

Currently we have 20-30 parish families who take turns preparing a hot dish or side dish, providing eating utensils or delivering and serving the meal. Without us, they would not have a hot meal all day.

We are in need of several persons who can drive and serve the meal. The time commitment is approximately 2 hours per month. You must be available by 5:00 p.m. We hope to find several drivers to allow the commitment to be only 2-3 times per year per person. If you are interested in learning more and/or ministering, please contact Brian and Chris Logue at 858-3538 or blogue@zoomtowm.com

Help!! Our St. Vincent de Paul Organization is looking for someone who would be interested in answering phone calls from neighbors who call in to our conference for help. The calls do not come to your home phone, but to a Google line that you can take in your own home at your convenience. If you have some extra time and have been looking for some way to help others, this would be a great opportunity. Call Claire Palmer at 805-5063 or Brenda Risch at 851-2886 for more information.

THOUGHT FOR OUR TEENS:
There can be no relationship without communication, which is always a two- way street: talking and listening.
Communication is the basis for friendship with other people and with God. In relating to God, most of us are used to doing all the talking. Without ever saying so, we act as if God's only role is to be quiet and to listen. That is, of course, an important part of what prayer is all about. But it's not the whole picture. God also has something to say to us which we can't hear until we get quiet and listen.

Evangelization Minute
The person who possesses Christian meekness is affectionate and tender towards everyone: disposed to forgive and excuse the frailties of others; the goodness of their heart appears in a sweet affability that influences his words and actions, presents every object to their view in the most charitable and pleasing light.
St. Francis De Sales 1567- 1622 Patron Saint of Writers, Authors and Journalists

STEWARDSHIP CORNER:
A young man was driving home from work and saw an older, poor man on the side of the road. He offered the poor man his lunch, and also offered to take him several miles to a truck stop where he could get a
Ride. While driving him to the truck stop, the young man suggested that it was getting close to dinnertime, and invited the older traveler home for dinner. During the meal, the younger man and his family enjoyed conversation with the older man, and learned that he was an itinerant farmer on his way west to help with a walnut  harvest. As it was getting late, the couple suggested that the traveler should stay for the night.

They gave up their room, complete with attached bath, for the night. When the traveler protested, the couple pointed out that the young children would awaken during the night, and it would be better if the couple slept on the couch so the older man would not be disturbed.

After dinner, the wife washed the man's clothes while he enjoyed sitting on the porch with a cool drink. Early the next morning, the wife prepared a hearty breakfast and packaged a good portion of food for him, and her husband drove him to the truck stop to help him find a ride. Before parting, the young man offered the poor man all the money in his wallet, which was less than $20.00. The traveler refused the money with the words, "You have given me more than anyone has ever given me in this life. You have given me my dignity as a human being."

Roman Missal
On Sunday, November 27of this year, Catholics in the United States began worshiping with the newly-translated texts of the third edition of the Roman Missal. Below is the continuing series introducing this Missal.
The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (the first document issued by the 2nd Vatican Council) tells us that "the Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious and active participation" in the celebration of the Eucharist and that this "is the aim to be considered before all else." What does "full, conscious and active" participation in the celebration of the liturgy mean?

We begin with "full." An attitude of "full participation" brings us to the liturgy, body and soul, with all our might. It begins long before the liturgy in making sure that Sunday Mass is not just one more thing on our "must do" list. Catholics let the time of liturgy be first. They come to Mass mindful of their responsibility—to themselves, one another and God. Just as they want the priest, choir and lector to prepare, they know that they too must prepare to be good members of the assembly. Full participation means that a baptized person does not mentally weave in and out of the liturgy.

Our duty is not just to be present; our duty is to be fully present. The songs are for singing, the Scriptures for listening, the silence for reflecting, the intercessions for pleading, the Eucharistic prayer for immense thanksgiving, the Communion for every kind of hunger and thirst satisfied in partaking together of the Body and Blood of Christ and the dismissal for going out to love the world the way God does. Consider your reasons for attending mass. Are the reasons mainly about obligation? What might each of us do to allow mass attendance to become an opportunity for transformation?

Merchandise Booth:
Merchandise Booth 2012 – The heat and rain did not stop us – relocated us but…we still did well! Just a reminder if your received a gift that you're not sure what to do with…I can probably find a home for it in a "basket!" Also , gift cards are a great and easy contribution to the booth and help the school. Please be aware that some cards are used to help purchase missing items for the merchandise booth baskets.
I also have the fall and Christmas baskets complete at this time. As always, I thank you for your support! Questions? Call Gail 825-8558.
